Rapid Experimental Alloy Development (TD-READ)

Organizations:
Ames Laboratory
Areas:
Elastocaloric
Magnetocaloric
Description:

The TD-READ experimental capacity utilizes high throughput arc melting system to prepare a large amount of bulk alloy samples. The current capacity is about 96 samples per day, with each sample weighing 1 to 5 grams. The obtained samples can be heat treated with 2 thermal modules. Each module is capable of simultaneously and individually heat treating 48 samples in a protected environment. Mechanical processing such as rolling or extrusion can be performed at room temperature. Temperature dependent mechanical properties of the prepared samples can be assessed with scanning macro-indentation and impulse vibration techniques.
